“’S e a leannan ‘th’annam.”“It is his lover that I am.”

Tha sin mar a thuirt mi! ‘S ceart sin! That’s what I said! That’s correct!
Och, carson a tha sibh ‘g ràdh nach fhaod miWhy are you saying that I may not
Suidhe leis?! Ghairm mi’ ‘n taigh-leighis, thàinigSit with him?! I summoned the hospital, I came
Mi leis, ‘s làimsichidh sibh mi mar neo-neach?!With him, and you treat me like I’m nobody?!
Th’ an còir agamsa ga fhaicinn-sa, naI have the right to see him,
Abraibh thugam nach nach eil ‘n coir sin agam!Don’t tell me that I haven’t that right!

Fichead bliadhna ‘s a seachd guTwenty-seven years that we
Bheil sinn còmhla air a bhith, o chionn bhaBeen together, ever since we
Sinne ‘nar co-oileanaich aig oillthigh...!Were fellow students at university...!
Is chan eil na còirichean no leasanAnd we still don’t have the rights or benefits
Phòsaidh againn fhath’st! An dith’s pòst’ òg sin,Of marriage! That young married couple,
Chan eil iad air ‘bhith pòst’ dhà bhliadhn’!They haven’t been married two years!

Dè ‘n cuid nach eil sibh a’ tuigsinn?!What part are you not understanding?!
Tha gaol agam air! Gu seaghach, is eI love him! Practically it’s husbands
Cèilean ‘th’annainne! Carson nach thuig sibh?!That we are! Why won’t you understand?!
Is ma siubhlaidh e, ‘n dèidh sin, dè tachraidhIf he’ll die, after that, what will happen
Thugam?! Air sgàth Dè, na dèanaibh seo dhomh,To me...?! For God’s sake, don’t do this to me,
Leigibh mi ga fhaicinn! ‘ S e mo chèile…!Let me see him! He’s my husband...!

Air a’ char as lugha, abraibh thugamAt least say to me
Gum bi e gu math. Ma ‘s e ur toil e...!That he will be all right. If you please...!
Written sometime in the middle of 2004. I just had to call attention to the plight of same-sex couples when they don't have the rights and security of marriage; visiting a sick spouse at the hospital, paying taxes, inheritance rights and bereavement benefits, and over a thousand rights that heterosexual couples often take for granted. It's amazing how much changes in ten years...!

I like this. I like how you put it into two languages. What was the other language? I can say this, with due respect I think you should break up each line. For instance have one line in the first language. The second line could be in English. It seemed a little jumbled to me.

But I did love the message in your poem. It is sad that until recently that same sex couples had no rights. I read about a couple where a man adopted his boyfriend so they could do most of what you wrote up. That's just wrong.

Back to the poem, it really touched me because I know a few couples who have been treated the way you described. I think you described the situation very well. I felt bad for the man. I couldn't imagine not being able to see my loved one ill or in pain and not see them and hold their hand.

You did a great job on this. Thank God they changed the laws. It's about time we are catching up with other parts of the world!
