Ever since hearing about the crisis in Antarctica (scientists claim that the western half of its ice sheet is poised to collapse into the sea and it has reached the point of no return) and already fretting about the Arctic and the potential mass extinction, I so often want to turn back time and change events to stop this crisis at its origins, to solve this whole problem NOW... I already do what I can to minimize my carbon footprint and conserve and I find, to my dismay, that hardly anybody seems to be taking the necessary precautions and the world is already fighting a battle on many fronts. And it shouldn't even be such big partisan problem because it effects everybody.

btw I do applaud you on working on sustainability. With what they want to do to our energy supply world-wide, and the coming cooling, tens of millions of people are going to be in big trouble- and that's in the developed nations. Energy poverty will be far worse in third-world nations, and so will the die-off of humans.

I'm talking about recent articles about how the western half of Antarctica's ice sheet is poised to collapse into the sea and that it's reached the point of no return.

Did those articles also mention the fact that it might take at least 1000 years to happen, if it happens at all?

No, I have not seen such passages. Perhaps it is so, but I don't want to take any chances. I'm scared enough as it is. I tell you this honestly, I'm scared for the future of this planet.

I know what I have seen in pictures if the melting Arctic glaciers and in the deaths of bees, plus Indigenous communities and communities in low-lying regions threatened by rising sea levels. I have a B.A. in anthropology and, while that might not deal specifically with the natural world, it deals with enough to convince me that climate change is happening. Scientists overwhelmingly say that it is happening now and faster the ecosystems can adapt. I work as an intern for a nonprofit for sustainability, indigenous gardens, and community outreach and information that I've gathered there seems pretty valid. I live in California and we are in the middle of a nasty drought while the Plains and east coast have been soaked in floods and storms. Again, I don't want to take that risk.

I don't want this to be a divisive matter because it is something that effects everybody, and it's such a frustration for me since I want the future of this world (including humanity's future) to be secure.

I never said climate change wasn't happening, in fact, the climate has gone through drastic changes the past 11,000 years, both warming and cooling. And I don't wish to be divisive, either, but these are the facts:

Bees dying off, has nothing to do with climate change. Bee die-offs have been recorded going as happening about every 50 years, as far back as can be traced.

There are a fair number of research papers which indicate that climate shifts have occurred faster than this one. Very recent papers, in fact, indicate that previous papers claiming nature / animals / birds / insects / fish can't cope with the changes, are in fact, Wrong.

California has seen droughts up to 200 years long, not to mention, 2/3 of the state was a Desert and still is desert- it was only due to human engineering that so many people could live there in the first place. Also, 400,000 acre-feet of water per year, is being diverted away from human / agricultural use in California, to protect a handful of fish, which were shown to be an invasive species to begin with.

Most of the glaciers you hear about melting, did not exist 5000 years ago- which is why, as they melt today, people are finding artifacts, ancient villages and human remains beneath them. In fact from 9000 to 5000 years ago, the Earth was so warm that, for one period of time (6000 years ago), the Arctic was so warm (6-9C higher than now) as to be ice-free almost year-round, for several centuries. This did NO harm to polar bears and neither will the current warming.

During the Eemian interglacial, 125,000 years ago, the oceans were as much as 250 meters deeper than they are now. That would put where I grew up, under 300 feet of water. Oceans rise, oceans fall.

All indications now are that we are heading into a new round of cooling, quite possibly a very long one on the order of the Little Ice Age. This despite what all those 'experts' say. And those who claim the Antarctic glaciers are about to fall into the sea, are ignoring that Antarctica is seeing record sea-ice, and that the continent has been setting the coldest temperature records ever recorded, the past few years.
