You defy me
And deny me
From marrying the
One I love? Why?

Your book enables
Your people to wed.
But your book
Denies our true love.
I wrote this in 2004. I was nineteen and newly out of the closet and probably because of that more accusatory and militant in my views. I have mellowed a bit, but I still have this lingering distrust for organized religion, especially when "religion" is used to justify infringements on the rights of other.

It takes more significance now with the case of that Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis who has refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples citing her "religious belief" that it's wrong, never mind that she has been married four times and produced children out of wedlock. It just sounds incredibly hypocritical to me.

You can believe anything that you want to believe, but when your religious beliefs begin to violate the rights of others I just have to draw the line.

I thinkt his is an incredibly powerful piece. For a piece that was written eleven years ago it is just as relevant now as it was back in 2004. The lack of of any defined structure plays well to the cathartic nature of the subject matter and the simplistic language really works because it conveys a complex message that cuts through like a knife, it is on point and easy to digest. I haven't seen many other pieces centering on the theme of marriage equality, so this is definitely the most original work that I've seen. This is my first critique and I don't really know how to write them effectively. Personally, I hate critiquing because I don't like the attention it brings me, but this is a really good piece and I can't think of any ways to improve it, personally, I don't believe it needs any improvement.
